Top Ski Picks

October 27th, 2006 · 1 Comment

Anyone who has skied Squaw knows that the terrain here is unlike anywhere else in the world. Because of the extremeness of the terrain and our one of a kind snow the people who call squaw home demand more from their skis then most. Here are our top picks for the 2006-2007 season.

K2 Pontoon:
Dimensions: 160-130-120
Size: 179, 189
The new K2 Pontoon follows in the footsteps of the cult hit Spatula. Its reverse camber style provides for unbelievable float and unlike the Spatula, this ski can be smoothly maneuvered on the groomers. With a super wide tip (160) and a thinner tail (120) this ski allows for easy washouts, which  may not be the most stylish way to get around the groomers but when you get them in the deep the last thing on your mind is how your gay ass looks on the groomers. With unsinkable tips and narrow tails these skis allow the rider to sinks the tails down into the snow wail keeping the tips riding higher the the Squaw lifties. Another great ski by Squaw local Shane McConkey. Thanks Shane you the man!

Nordica Blower:
Dimensions: 139-110-129
Lengths: 185, 193
The Blowers are the last stop before getting into the real beefy 120+ waist skis. A fun ski with plenty of float and some side cut but can get a bit soft once they are broken in. If you are looking for a pure powder ski with out bumping up to the real big boys this maybe the ski you are looking for.

Rossignol B Squads:
dimensions:(164, 174, 184) 130-100-120 / (189-194) 130-104-117
lengths: 164, 174, 184, 189, 194
The B Squads are the newest in the B line of skis from Rossinol. Bigger and stiffer then the B4 this ski will bust through anything and give you a   ultra solid feel under your foot. A flat tail cut tail, which is very similar to the old volkl explosive tail. If you have only been skiing twin tips the past few seasons try out some straight tail. One thing to know about this ski is that the 194 is a super stiff ski so unless you are planning to be going 60 mph off 50+ footers you may want to think about the 184 or 189’s.

Dynastar Legend Pro:
Dimensions: 124-97-116
Turn Radius: 29m @ 186cm
Size: 176 cm 186 cm 194cm
HELL YES! Waht? this ski is the shit! One great thing about the Pro’s is that though they have great float in the pow you can still ski these skis everyday. Solid at high speed you will have little hesitation to point these guys down the palisades for some high speed straight lining. This season a beefier Pro is coming out named the Legend Pro Plus + XXL with Dimensions: 132-109-122 it’s a big ski.

Volkl Gotama:
Dimensions: 133-105-124
Lengths: 168,176,183,190

Though the Gotama has been on the market for a few years now the 06/07 Gotama is a new model. She has keep the same sexy waist (105) but has gotten some work done to her fun bags and has put some more junk in the trunk. Translation: wider tip and tail. Younger model = bit sexier and provides for a better “ride” then the older models but is still well-rounded enough to handle any kind of date.

Blizzard Titan Pro:
Dimensions: 125-95-115
Length: 193
So you are a badass mother f#%*’er who skis big lines fast? Good for you. With a wood core and sandwiched titanium sidewalls, this ski will keep you from looking like the out of control madman you are. Super stable and great for straight lining but if you are looking for something you can share with your girlfriend checkout the Titan Sigma Nine.

Line Prophet 130:
Dimensions: 155-130-148
Length: 186
With measurements the size of Star Jones this is one Fat ski. Build for the big storm days the Prophet 130’s have a unique sidecut which puts the contact points farther back on the ski. Take these out on a powder day and your friends will be claming that you are a cheating bastard. Tip: find some cooler friends with fatter skis.
