Winter Car Survival - James Kim’s Family Saga

While this isn’t ski related James Kim is a friend of friends of this site and everyone who has driven to Squaw after a heavy snowfall can appreciate his struggle.

James’ wife and two daughters were found alive after over a week but James, who left to find help, is still missing. While we wish Mr. Kim’s search party godspeed I wanted to put together a post with links to winter survival tools and techniques:

Personal Locator BeaconA PLB or EPIRB is a device that will send your coordinates directly to a Rescue Coordination Center. Used on ships to find sinking vessel thousands of miles out to see it works just as well on a remote Lake Tahoe road or Backcountry Trail. If I had the choice of only one item on a deserted island; this would be it!
