While this isn’t ski related James Kim is a friend of friends of this site and everyone who has driven to Squaw after a heavy snowfall can appreciate his struggle.
After driving home to San Francisco from Portland James Kim and his family were lost in heavy snow on a remote road in Oregon. Read More…
James’ wife and two daughters were found alive after over a week but James, who left to find help, is still missing. While we wish Mr. Kim’s search party godspeed I wanted to put together a post with links to winter survival tools and techniques:
Unofficially Tested
Personal Locator BeaconA PLB or EPIRB is a device that will send your coordinates directly to a Rescue Coordination Center. Used on ships to find sinking vessel thousands of miles out to see it works just as well on a remote Lake Tahoe road or Backcountry Trail. If I had the choice of only one item on a deserted island; this would be it!

MIOX Water Purifier A small and easy to use purifier that the Army took with then to Afghanistan and Iraq. We used it extensively on a trip to India and never once got sick (at least not from the water!)
Inflatable Life Jacket Going to be near water? This is a must have.
