So the new Squallywood is out, Sweet! Much like the other Good Book this new testament has some new ideas and stories in it. For one thing, each line now has the pitch of the slope. In addition the new version has some new chapters such as Takin’ Yer Licks, which has a number of personal stories from skiers who have gotten themselves into some tight spots on the hill. There is also a chapter called Falling Into White; the story of two skiers who had one hell of a morning trying to ski Tram Face.
Just like the first edition, Squallywood 2nd edition, is the holy grail of skiing the radest lines at Squaw Valley. You can pick up this killer book online at Squallywoodthebook.com or at one of the local ski shops. I know that 9 lives in Tahoe City has a number of copies signed by author and skiing madman Robb Gaffney, MD.

Yeah Squallywood is awesome. Just moved out here and its really holding me over and providing great “dry land training” so that when the snow falls I’ll have an idea of where to head. Its also been a great conversation piece, allowing me to ask opinions about lines I want to ski and to better understand lines that friends of mine talk about. I have read it cover to cover and no doubt will be reviewing the night before our first big storm hoping to gain a little bit of an advantage on my fellow “competitors” come powder morning.

Here’s what’s new in the book (From the Tahoe Wold article “The Gospel of Gaffney”:
What’s new in the second edition:
• New introduction with commentary on progression and the epic 2005/06 winter at Squaw Valley and the characters it spawned.
• There are seven or eight new lines described in the second edition, in addition to the 152 described in the 1st edition.
• Gaffney also went around with a surveying tool to measure the pitch of all the lines described in the book as well. (The steepest pitch of any line in the book is High Line on Eagle’s Nest, which measures 68.5 degrees at the start. Gaffney estimated that the average pitch of all the lines in the book is 50-55 degrees.)
• Chapter entitled “Falling Into the White” that describes the harrowing descent of two skiers of The Rockpile on the Tram Face, one of whom was swept over the line by an avalanche and severely injured. Gaffney describes it as a miniature version of “Touching The Void.”
• Another chapter entitled “Takin’ Yer Licks” written by Squaw skiers about their worst crashes at Squaw.
